Minnesota PFML Premium Contributions Due April 30, 2026 for Quarter 1

First Deadline: April 30, 2026

Minnesota employers covered under the state’s Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) program must submit their first premium contributions by April 30, 2026.


These contributions are based on wages earned between January 1 and March 31, 2026, and must be paid to the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED).


What This Means

  • First PFML premium payment is due April 30, 2026

  • Contributions cover Q1 2026 wages

  • Payments must be made quarterly going forward


Ongoing Requirements

  • Premium contributions are due on or before the last day of the month following each calendar quarter

  • Employers must withhold and contribute premiums as required

  • Contributions are deposited into the state PFML insurance fund


Already in Effect

  • January 1, 2026

    • Premium collection and payroll withholding began

    • PFML benefits became available to eligible employees

  • December 1, 2025

    • Employer and employee notice requirements took effect

  • November 1, 2025

    • Anti-retaliation protections became effective

  • October 31, 2024

    • Quarterly wage detail reporting requirements began

 

Why It Matters

This marks the first major funding deadline for Minnesota’s PFML program. Missing deadlines or incorrect contributions could result in penalties and compliance issues.


What Employers Should Do

  • Confirm payroll systems are correctly calculating and withholding PFML premiums (Vida HR does this for our HRO and Payroll Clients)

  • Ensure Q1 2026 contributions are submitted by April 30

  • Review pay statements for compliance with disclosure requirements

  • Coordinate with payroll providers to ensure accurate reporting and deposits
