Illinois Clarifies Secure Choice Retirement Savings Enrollment Rules

Effective: January 14, 2026

Illinois has clarified employer enrollment requirements under the Secure Choice Retirement Savings Program.


Beginning January 14, 2026, employers must automatically enroll eligible employees who:

  • Are 18 years of age or older

  • Earn Illinois wages

  • Have been employed for 120 days


New employees must be enrolled as soon as practicable, but no later than 120 days after their employment start date.
