Michigan Paid Sick Leave Applies to Small Employers Starting October 1, 2025

Effective: October 1, 2025
As a reminder, beginning October 1, 2025, small business employers in Michigan (those with 10 or fewer employees) must begin complying with the Earned Sick Time Act (ESTA).
Under ESTA, eligible employees must be provided with up to 40 hours of paid sick and safe leave per year. This includes time off for personal illness, preventive care, safe time (related to domestic violence or sexual assault), and certain family needs.
Note: While the ESTA originally took effect on February 21, 2025, coverage for small business employers was delayed to October 1 as part of the same-day amendments.
