New Hampshire Prohibits Hairstyle Discrimination - HR ALERTS

New Hampshire Prohibits Hairstyle Discrimination

Assortment of hair styling tools
Effective: September 1st, 2024

New Hampshire now prohibits employers from discriminating against applicants or employees based on a protective hairstyle, which is defined as hair type or style, including braids, locs, tight coils or curls, cornrows, Bantu knots, Afros, twists, and head wraps. This law went into effect 9/1/2024 and applies to all employers.

This makes New Hampshire another in the growing list of states that have enacted a ‘CROWN’ type act, which protects hairstyle and texture from discrimination.

Employers in New Hampshire should update their EEO policy in their handbooks to reflect these new changes. The law can be found here.
