Maine PFML Benefits Begin May 1, 2026

Effective: May 1, 2026

Maine’s Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) program becomes fully operational on May 1, 2026, when eligible employees may begin taking leave.

All Maine employers with eligible employees in the state must be prepared to administer up to 12 weeks of paid leave under the program.

What This Means

  • Employees may begin taking PFML leave starting May 1, 2026

  • Eligible employees can receive up to 12 weeks of paid leave

  • Employers must be ready to administer leave requests and ensure compliance

Funding Timeline

  • Employer and employee contributions began January 1, 2025

  • The program is now transitioning from funding to active leave usage

Employer Requirements

  • Post a PFML notice in the workplace

  • Provide written notice to employees within 30 days of hire

  • Ensure policies and processes are in place to manage leave requests

Why It Matters

This marks the final phase of Maine’s PFML rollout. Employers who have been contributing to the program must now ensure they are operationally ready to support employee leave.
