Oregon Expands Workplace Violence Prevention Requirements for Healthcare Settings

Effective Date: May 1, 2026
Oregon has adopted additional workplace violence prevention requirements for certain healthcare providers.
Beginning May 1, 2026, home health agencies, hospice programs, and special inpatient care facilities (SICFs) must establish, implement, and maintain a workplace violence prevention program that includes specific required elements, including employee training provisions.
In addition, home health agencies, hospice programs, SICFs, and hospitals must implement a flagging system designed to communicate potential threats of violence or disruptive behavior to providers and personnel. The system must use both:
Electronic health record (EHR) alerts, and
Visual flag indicators.
What This Means for Employers
Covered healthcare entities must formalize workplace violence prevention programs if not already in place.
Training requirements should be reviewed to ensure alignment with the new rule.
EHR systems and operational workflows may need updates to implement compliant flagging systems.
Coordination between clinical, HR, compliance, and IT teams will be important.
Action Recommended
Covered Oregon healthcare employers should assess current workplace violence prevention policies, training programs, and EHR capabilities in advance of the May 1, 2026 effective date.
